Curriculum Pathways
At Conifers House School, every pupil follows a curriculum pathway tailored to their individual strengths, needs, and EHCP outcomes.
Our three pathways provide the flexibility to meet pupils at their current stage of learning while supporting them to progress at their own pace.
Pathways are not fixed by age or key stage. Pupils may remain within a pathway or move between pathways over time, depending on their development and learning profile.
Green Pathway
Learning to Learn
For pupils at the earliest stages of engagement with learning
This pathway supports pupils who may be non-verbal or semi-verbal, require sensory integration, and are working primarily on early developmental, communication, and regulation goals.
Focus areas:
Communication and interaction (AAC, visual supports, intensive interaction)
Emotional regulation and sensory integration
Engagement, attention, and early problem-solving
Developing curiosity and confidence in a learning environment
Approach:
Highly structured, low-arousal environments
Individualised timetables
Specialist interventions and therapeutic input
Learning through play, exploration, and routines
Orange Pathway
Participation in Learning
For pupils beginning to access subject-based learning within a highly supported, practical framework
This pathway supports pupils who are engaging more consistently with structured learning activities and are developing functional communication, independence, and social understanding.
Focus areas:
Functional literacy and numeracy
Communication, emotional regulation, and social skills
Life skills and independence
Topic-based cross-curricular learning
Approach:
Scaffolded subject-specific learning
Visual and practical learning methods
Opportunities for group work, sensory regulation, and real-world application

Purple Pathway
Independent Learning
For pupils able to access more formal subject learning, with increasing independence and future planning
This pathway supports pupils working towards Entry Level, Functional Skills, and, where appropriate, GCSEs or equivalent qualifications. Preparation for adulthood is embedded throughout.
Focus areas:
Accreditation in English, Maths, ICT, and vocational subjects
Communication and self-advocacy
Independent living and problem-solving
Transition planning, employability, and community access
Approach:
Personalised timetables with subject teachers and support staff
A mix of classroom-based learning and real-life experiences
Emphasis on independence, initiative, and reflection
Continued access to therapy where needed
A Flexible, Needs-Led Model
While each pathway offers a distinct framework, we teach the pupil, not the label. Our staff team regularly reviews progress, adjusting approaches as needed to ensure every pupil continues to feel challenged, supported, and empowered.
Curriculum content across all pathways is linked to National Curriculum objectives, EHCP outcomes, and Preparation for Adulthood goals.
